GN Sporting Club

Club History

The GN Sporting Club has been around now for 26 terrific years. The club came into existence way back in 1982 and dominated the local soccer scene from 1984 to 1989, winning every available tournament at least once and having a proud record of winning the KDS Vancouver Tournament for six years out of seven.

In 1982 the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple Delta Surrey approached the club to play under its name and hence the name Guru Nanak Sporting Club. Then in 1989 the youth wing of the club began and has grown from one under-eight team into teams at all ages and skill levels. Within the last four years, the club has also formed girls’ teams in various age groups. Teams at each age, in boys and girls divisions, make up the GNSC organization, consisting of over 300 youth and adult players.

The men’s open team entered the Fraser Valley Soccer League in 1982 and in consecutive years reached the First Division of the Fraser Valley League. Also in 1986 the club reached the final of the Brader Cup (league cup consisting of more than 60 teams) and repeated the feat again in 1997, reaching the finals of the Pakenham Cup (the oldest club competition in Canada). In the 1999/2000 season the club entered a team into the under 21 division of the Fraser Valley Soccer League, with players averaging just 17 years of age, and finished as Division Champions and reached the finals of the Presidents Cup (cup for all divisions except premier). The club has also regained promotion to the Premier Division of the League to provide the best competition available for our players. In addition, the club has a good base of youth players (more than 50% of which play on Metro, Gold, or Silver level select teams).

It takes dedicated players, coaches and organizers to keep the teams going in the summer and winter, while striving at all times to improve. This organization is committed to providing a positive learning atmosphere in which our children can develop their soccer skills. It also provides youth with an opportunity to grow roots in their community, while being physically active.
